Can not connect to pptp server Error:691

I am having a problem connecting to a Ubuntu server 8.04 running pptpd from Windows XP computer.

When this was setup, 2 clients were put into the chap-secrets file. About a month later I added five more clients. I had tested one of the original clients, successfully, using Windows XP VPN network connection. However, I have been unable to connect with the new clients, albeit the the original clients still connect.

The authentication is MS-CHAPv2

My sense is that I have missed something in the setup of the new clients, particularly since the original clients still work. I can't display the chap-secrets file, since the passwords are in current use. The file seems to be constructed properly I use tabs to separate the entries, and have put quotes around passwords that have ASCII characters in them. To no avail. There are 3 extra lines at the end of the file.

One article suggested that the domain(workgroup) plus \\ should be added to the client name, but this is not the case for the two client names that work.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is kind of an old question but have you reloaded/restarted pptpd?

I actually did figure out the problem, to my embarrassment. I was editing the wrong chap-secrets file. I had also forgotten to add the last "*" at the end of the chap-secrets entry line which, I believe, prevents the ppp daemon from knowing which Client IP addresses are valid. Now my biggest problem is getting all the client computers to have user names which are valid on the Linux box. Thanx for your interest however.
