Can linux do this? iphone backup and file server
 

hi this is my first post. i have no experience with ubuntu or linux.
i have installed ubuntu 14.04 on old desktop and have set samba file share on it and also open ssh so i can connect to it headless. my question is. Is it possible for me to backup iphone photos to a folder through wifi just like the icloud. Any help appreciated.

Given that you just claimed to be new to Linux in general and Ubuntu in particular, this is a very good achievement. Did you have an experienced fellow user who helped you a little, or did you pick tutorials from the net and follow them? 'cause I know it may be fairly easy to get a basic Ubuntu installation to work - configuring Samba and getting that to work, however, isn't trivial. It's not exactly rocket science, either, but there's always the odd tripwire.

Disclaimer: I don't know much about the things with a bitten apple on them. Thus, I deliberately skip the term iCloud.

However, a quick Google search makes me believe that iOS has no Samba support of its own, but many people have tried to develop something like that. Apparently, none of them succeeded up to the point of having a robust and reliable solution.

But hey, that's the deal: Once you decide to use Apple products, you deliberately give up the freedom of interfacing with the rest of the world, except where approved by Apple. And that's why this has never been an option for me.

on my galaxy I installed sshdroid which turns my fone into a mini ssh server. then I just and drag-and-drop files across the network.

I would look into OwnCloud. You can literally create your own cloud storage location and sync your data to it. And, if you make your system available from the Internet, you would be able to access everything from anywhere, even if your device isn't with you.

Disclaimer: I have never tried to do specifically what you're asking - it may not be easily possible.

You could also look into IFTTT and set up a recipe that would automatically copy any new photo to your file server. I know that you can do this with OneDrive and I believe Google Drive.

maybe ifone has some sort of ssh facility that can be downloaded from the store (or rooted) ?
not really sure... i just remember a bunch of apple users throwing a shit-fit because they changed the dock or something a while back ?

The reason Apple users went nuts is because they changed the DEVICE connector from a 30-pin to the Lightning connector. Europe made Apple stay with the 30-pin connector on the new devices, and those users are bent because the performance over the wire isn't as good as was promised. Pick your battles, people...

thanks just tried owncloud looks ok. im only playing around with this old computer because i dont want to spend money on new hardware YET until i figure out if linux is for me or not.
The bitten apple is only temporary ill go back to android next year. i will research IFTTT never heard of it. Thanks for all replies
