Can Linux and Win98 co-exist?
Hi
My current PC runs Win98. we always have the option to boot the system into DOS mode. Would I be able to install a basic version of Linux side by side with Win98, and have the option to boot into Linux mode? I read lots of Linux OS materials. I'd eventually like to be able to work with the kernel code, to incorporate some of my own implementations. I never touched Linux before, if I want to install it, try running couple programs on it, and experiment with it, could some one recommend a basic version for me to try; as a start. Thanks LarryC |
If you can boot off of your CD-ROM drive, you could give Knoppix a try. It will boot completely off of the CD-ROM and you wouldn't have to install anything on the hard drive. That way you can play around with it and decide if you want to make Linux more permanent.

Do a Search, you'll see that there are pages and pages of people who dual boot. They can give you instructions on how to do it.
A good newbie installation is Mandrake - lots of hand holding. Edited because a [/url] makes it a whole lot neater! ;) Xavierp |
Trying Knoppix would be a good idea for experimenting with linux (You can also use it without booting from the CD drive, by using the utility KNOPPIX\mkfloppy.bat, but for installing it to the hard-disk the best thing might be to install a distribution that can use either UMSDOS or a loopback file, like Mandrake (you should boot in expert mode), Topologi-Linux and DragonLinux.
