can Knoppix fix the MBR for a Linux partition?

Something went wrong when I was installing the master boot record (or bootloader, I forget what to call it) for Mandrake--I think I installed it in the wrong place--so the bootloader just fills the screen with randon numbers. I reinstalled everything all over, thinking a new MBR would be written, but it didn't help. If I run my Knoppix disc, can I write a new MBR for the Mandrake partition from Knoppix?

It is possible, but you'd need to mount the Mandrake partition to get the config and then use it to re-create MBR. Do you have MDK install disk? Try to boot from it, it has an option to recreate MBR (it reads the right file etc).

If MBR is overwritten it means it bootloader was written into the right place but something else went wrong. Writing it in a wrong place usually has no visible effect.

I tried the option, but it didn't work, so I had to reinstall. Good thing I'm between permanent distributions at this time.
