Can i use Autodesk Maya on slackware??????
 

hi guys
am totally an alien to linux , slackware etc.
am a 3d animator(autodesk maya) with no programming knowledge.

currently i use windows xp sp2 on my desktop pc at home.
my system config is....
intel p4 1.5 ghz ,
1gb ram,
with modem, broadband internet connection,
dvd writer.

my basic question is...

does "slackware" works like "windows" with Graphical user interface(GUI)?

can i have windows and slackware in same machine ??? if so how to install it?

can i install anyother applications like yahoo messenger, Vlc Player, Quicktime player, real player, winamp and ofcourse animation software like autodesk maya and image editing software like photoshop on slackware????

wat is slackware and linux??? are there any difference????

all i know is... linux is works faster than windows, even in low system configuration.

please educate me to use linux. cos i like the idea of open source software.

You should have googled for some information. Linux is a kernel and slackware is a distribution that used this kernel and various other open source softwares.
You can install slackware on a machine that already has windows so that you can dual boot slack and windows. It will have a graphical user interface as well.
It can do most of things that windows can but you will need alternate softwares for the same and they are all pretty much available by default and you may not need to install them manually.
Vlc is available on slack and it will play almost all the formats. Quick time is also available for linux I guess but not sure. I know real player is available.
Though yahoo messenger is available but you wont need it. You have multi protocol messenger client like Pidgin and Kopete.
Animation softwares are proprietary softwares and you will need to see if the manufacturer of the software has packaged it for linux but most of them are not available. You will need to run them under wine. Wine is windows emulator that will allow you to run windows application to run under linux.

Welcome to LQ and Slackware!

If you need both then other than a dual boot you could always utilize a Virtual Machine (VM). VirtualBox is one VM that I use with Vista as a Host to other OS clients. I also use VirtualBox with Slackware as the Host and M$ Windows as the client. This setup is much better than attempting 'WINE'. You can use M$XP or Slackware as your host to the alternate OS.

Answer:

YES. Gnu/Linux have better windowing choices because there are many "windowing" managers available FOR FREE, not like Microsoft where you only have what Redmond offers, you can only change your wallpapers and themes. >-(

Answer:

YES. This is the beauty with Linux and GRUB. You can do it by what we usually call "Dual-Booting" or "Multi-Booting" and many Linux users are multi booting. Me for one. :)

Answer:

YES. Running Gnu/Linux, I swear you have better applications there than what you are listing above. However, some distros don't preinstall "encumbered" or none free programs, in this case, free software has more than one substitutes. Slackware for one is hesitant to use non-free-software.

The best way to get educated is to "read" a good tutorial, which I have given you above or hereunder my signature, and "use" what you understood from that tutorial. Reading a good tutorial and using what you learn is the shortest process.

BY THE WAY, if you are new to Gnu/Linux DO NOT INSTALL SLACKWARE YET. This distribution is not meant for those who need "ease of use" approach. I recommend you Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora or SuSe. Slackware needs more manual configurations which you are not yet prepared. Slackware installation boots you into a black terminal (DOS Prompt) and there you are given "Congratulations! Slackware installation is complete." So if you expect a GUI after boot like XP don't go for Slackware yet. Slackware is for the advanced users.

so.. i can do evrything in linux jus like in windows. Amazing.

gud to know that maya is available for linux. cos thats wat i work with mostly.

so do you guys recommend me to give it try in linux for Maya (for a change)... cos i want my computing to speedup for doing animation ????
cos i really feel its worth trying linux for better computing experience and for some speed.

and for now i better try looking to learn and use.... Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora or SuSe than slackware.

If you want to use Maya for Linux..maybe think about switching from Slackware to Fedora or Centos..as Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise are what they provide support for.

..... CentOS is the free version of Redhat Enterprise .....

Maya runs fine under Slackware64. Just install it using rpm (as explained in Licensing and Installation guide) with the --nodeps option.
