Can I run this software in Linux

Hi

I have just installed the latest version of Mandrake. I now want to use few programming tools and I want to check I wiil be able to install and run them.

The 3 pieces of software require:

1. Software says it can be used under SOLARIS 2.5.1 and Solaris 2.6, under LINUX

2. RedHat Linux 7.3 RPM version
Red Hat Linux 9.0 RPM version

3. SunOS-4.1.3, SunOS-5.3 platforms

Can I run this software in mandrake?

With some hacking you definetly can get the RH version working.

Hi kos147

1. Says "under LINUX" so there should be no problems there, try it and take note of any error messages, you made need to install some additional libraries or something to satisfy dependencies, this isn't too hard.

2. Redhat and Mandrake both use RPM package format so installing it should go okay, again look at any error messages because there may be something this program requires that is in Redhat by default but not Mandrake, if so it should be pretty easy to track it down and install it.

3. I think this one will be a problem, I don't know too much about SunOS but I think its different enough from Mandrake that this won't work. I could be wrong though, no harm in trying.... (we hope ;) ).

just because it's for linux doesn't mean it'll work, if it's binaries it might be compiled for a different CPU architecture.

(is SOLARIS the hardware or OS? I can never remember)

The OS, but I believe it runs on SPARC...though I could be wrong.

Your best bet is always to compile from source...then architecture etc doesn't matter and you won't get lots of pernickety dependencies.
