Can I run Linux on my D drive?

I was thinking about trying Mandriva Linux, but all the info I see talks about dual booting XP and Linux on one drive. I have 2 hard drives and would like to install Linux on the D drive and have the computer boot to that drive when I tell it to. What will happen if I do that? Will it work and will I be able to use Windows when I boot from C and Linux when I boot from D?

In linux drive letter destination does not exist. But at any point you can install on a 2nd drive. and install the grub boot manager to the MBR of the first drive so as to be able to boot from it.

It needs its own partitions with it owns filesystem of ext3 usually the default. If there is no availabe room for partitions then shrink the existing partitions to make room. If there is no data on it needed then blow all partitions away and then install to the 2nd drive.
