can i just get the plasma workspace for ubuntu or do i need the kde desktop too?

As far as I know, plasma is a KDE thing, not a Gnome thing.

KDE is in the Ubuntu repos; you can install it and then choose it at the login screen. It will reside quite happily on the HDD next to Gnome.
