Hi

I suggest you read "How to ask questions the Smart Way" - see the top of this forum.

Yes you can.

How would we know - you haven't provided any details of what hardware you have (other than that its a Sony Vaio)?

More than likely it may affect your warranty if the machine is still under warranty. Without knowing your actual specifications I couldn't say for sure whether you'll have issues dual booting Ubuntu/XP.

Well if I knew what your hardware was I could comment.

Please explain properly what you're trying to achieve - this doesn't make much sense.

Before you remove Windows Vista, did the laptop come with a Vista installation CD? If so, good - look after that, and do what you wish with the laptop.

If you don't have a Vista install CD, you probably have a recovery partition. You may wish to take care to preserve this when installing XP and Ubuntu, in case you want Vista back some day. You may alternatively be able to make your own recovery or install disk from Vista.

I suggest you do the following:

1) Go to Sony's website and download the Windows XP drivers for your laptop. Save them to a USB stick or burn them to CD. You may need them in order to get online in Windows XP.

2) Install Windows XP. During the install, delete the existing C partition, then create a partition big enough to accommodate Windows XP but with enough space left for Ubuntu.

3) Install Ubuntu in the remaining space.

Changing your OS should not affect the warranty on your hardware - if Sony try to claim it does fight your case in court if need be. (Such a case can probably be taken to a small claims court, avoiding big legal fees).
