Can I install rpm.bin or .bin files on Fedora 11 ??

I'm running Fedora 11, however when I try to install an rpm.bin or a .bin file, it is not recognized.
Java can be downloaded as a rpm.bin or a .bin file and it will not install.
I guess I'm just stupid--what am I doing wrong??

Any help will be very much appreciated!!!

Try sh <file_name>.bin to run the download as a shell script. Most (but not all) .bin files are shell script with embedded binary sections.

Only if the the bin file is executable. Often a chmod +x <bin_file> is needed before the dot command will do anything for you . . .

one way to install a java .bin file
2.This is one way to install java, have to be root: get jre-6u7-linux-i586.bin from sun-java and copy to /usr and make sure it is executable.
Code:

cd /usr
./jre-6u7-linux-i586.bin
ln -sf /usr/jre1.6.0_12/bin/java /usr/bin/java

have to agree to sun-java terms
will work on most systems
note: version of java has changed since this was posted, change version numbers to the version you are using.
