can i install linux if i get 9 errors in memory test....
 

i have run the memory test for FEDORA 8 i have got totally 9 memory error.... can i continue install the linux....?
if not how to rectify that....
i have already installed the same linux but it hangs......
please help me...

If Linux is hanging, then it may be because of the memory errors....

When booting, are there any clues from the BIOS?

When is the last time this computer was cleaned? If you don't know, then try that first. Using static electricity protection, blow out (or vacuum) all the dust. Then disconnect and re-connect all connectors (not the CPU), and remove and re-install the memory sticks.

Another thing to try is putting the memory sticks in different slots.

i'm using win xp no prob in this os...

i have made the test said by u... but still getting error.... my ram when fixed in another slot giving long beep...... my mother board is intel D101 GCC.. ram is DYNET made and 512MB in size.... please give me a solution..... may i FC8 install it or not...

With the faults you describe it looks like the problem follows the stick of memory. You could have a dirty edge on the stick. But I really think the memory fault could be permanent. Therefore you should replace the stick. You could try cleaning the system and connector(s).

You should first use good ground techniques, either with a grounding wrist strip or at least placing yourself at the the same potential level as the system by maintaining contact with the equipment.

I would shut the power off to the system. Clean the card edge for the memory using strips of new 20# paper with alcohol. Swipe in one direction with folded wet paper for the edge, a new piece for each swipe. You can use a credit card to clean the connector if that is needed by folding the paper over the end of the credit card. But first you should use dry air to blow the connector out. In the USA it can be purchased at most computer/office supply houses, even Walmart has it. Then replace the card without touching the card edge. BTW, don't use a eraser to clean/buffer the card edge. You are doing more harm then good.

If this doesn't correct the problem then replace the stick. Since the error followed the stick I don't suspect a system error with data/addressing. If the memory is used with bad data/address problems then you will getting nothing but nightmares!

The error may not show up for the 'POST'. As for the 'M$ win xp' not showing an error. Well that will depend on where the error was and what type of error. If the error was a bit error then you probably didn't see anything obvious at the time. Error correction is limited.
