Can I install from a flash drive?

I just purchased a laptop that has no operating system. I was wondering if I download an operating sytem from the internet, and save it on a flash drive, will I be able to install the operating system on the laptop?

From this question, you can probably tell I've never installed an operating system before. I've always purchased systems that already had windows installed.

Any assistance given will be greatly appreciated.

Sure if two things are true;

1. The computer can boot from the flash media
2. The installation process has support for the flash media built in

The percentage of both being true is less than 1%
If you really mean USB memory then this percentage increases to around 50-75%
