can i delete install files?
 

I downloaded a .tar.gz file, installed the program, and it works. do i have to keep the extracted files from the original .tar.gz file?

extracted files u can delete. but maybe in the future u wiil have to uninstall this program. extracted files will help u to uninstall this program. search "uninstalling program from sources tar.gz" here or on google.com.

tar.gz u can delete

if its something you might need to recompile like mplayer(for new codecs), you might want to hang on to the src.
