Can gurus suggest a configuration for installation?

I want to install Debian in my small PC:

Intel Pentium 4, 1.7GHz
256KB RAM
20GB disk

actually I want to install 2 versions of Debian:one stable and the other experimental.

I am very new to Linux, knowing only ABC about it.

I hope here people can give some suggestion on how to partition my disk for various directories under Linux.

Thanks for your knowledge and I will feed back.

hi there

for this make sure u have atleat 2 linux partions(primary will be fine)
nowadays all linux distros give least problem while installing, i haven't tried debian, so it can be installed in a non-primary partion i am not sure of that

u can have a common swap space/partion

regards

Thanks, man.

But this really won't solve my problem. The thing I want to make clear is that how much room should I give each directory, e.g. the shared swap (500MB?).

Make a primary partition for /boot around 32 to 50 MB depending how pretty you want the bootloader to be.

Make a swap partition around 512 MB to 1 GB. The swap partition can be used by any Linux distribution.

Make two (2) 4 GB partitions that will be the root partitions for each Debian version. You can make one partition for /etc be around 64 MB to 128 MB if you want your configs be the same. I do not suggest making a partition for /var (around 256 MB is good for /var). You may get a way with making a partition for /tmp (around 1 GB to 2 GB is good for /tmp).

The rest of the hard drive you can use for /home.
