Can anybody suggest a set of apps with which to start

I am trying to get Linux (Gentoo) running on a Compaq Presario R3000Z - AMD64 - Laptop.

I have been slowly working my way through issues but can begin to see the light.

I am planning to run Gnome but beyond that was wondering what the consensus is for a useful set of apps for home/family/development purposes.

Looking forward to your suggestions.

FTP/SFTP client - gFTP
Office suite - OpenOffice.org

What else do you need?

If you're coming from the Windows world, you could also try:
Firewall: Firestarter
Anti-Virus: F-Prot

just to put yourself at ease even though you will not be needing these. I know when I switched to Linux from Windows, I was just feeling uneasy about not having any firewall or anti virus installed, even though they are not needed.
