Just a question: can an upgrade of linux modify the bios of my motherboard?

My system is based on Linux Debian Jessie/Sid (Linux debian 3.13-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.13.10-1 (2014-04-15) x86_64 GNU/Linux) and Windows Xp Sp3. I have to use Windows for some applications.
Some days ago I've made an upgrade and after that, when I switched on windows, I could not put the system (Windows Xp) in standby mode.

I would say no, debian upgrade and standby of xp should not be related to each other. Probably something else had happened too...

I agree with pan64. Also, I've seen BIOS settings being reset to default on old computers. There's a battery on the motherboard, usually CR2032. If you lose BIOS settings, you proably need to replace that battery.

Thank for your attention, but my battery seems to be working and the bios appear to be right till now.

Anything can happen. Although unlikely it is just a memory location and can be altered. Both settings and bios.

Not sure how this relates to bios. "could not put the system (Windows Xp) in standby mode." however.

Diag reason it doesn't go into standby then you may find clues as to original cause.
