I have a Dell Dimension 2400 running Ubuntu Server 12.04.03. I would like to suspend it, but every time I try to do so it just hangs. I have tried

I tried with sudo and it gave the same result.
If it means anything, the BIOS has an option for "Suspend Mode". The options are "S1" and "S3". I tried to suspend with both settings, with the exact result.
When I run the "pm-suspend", here is the exact sequence of events:
1. I hit enter. (If needed, I type my password and hit enter again)
2. The cursor moves down to the beginning of the next line.
3. I hear a slight click, probably my hard drive.
4. The cursor disappears, the screen remains on, and the system does not respond to anything.
5. I wait for a few minutes.
6. I press and hold the power button to kill the power.
Throughout the duration of the few minutes I waited, I noted the following:
1. The hard drives still sound like they are on.
2. The CPU and power supply fans are still on.
3. The Ethernet lights are OFF. My router supports the theory that the Ethernet is disconnected.
4. The diagnostic lights on the back remain all green.
Specs:
CPU- Intel Celeron @ 2.4 GHz
RAM- 1536 MB DDR SDRAM
Motherboard graphics, sound, ethernet, etc.
I hope that this is enough, if you give me instructions I should be able to get more.
I'll try some quirk options for the "pm-suspend", and let you know how that goes.
