Can't start X

I'm trying to run KDE3 on a Gentoo 2004.3 install, but when I go to start X, I get this error:

Fatal server error:
Cannot run in framebuffer mode. Please specify busIDs for all framebuffer devices

When I try xorgcfg, it stops with the same error. I know tha tthis has something to do with my video card, which is an ATI Radeon AIW 8500, but I already installed the ati-drivers package. I've been told that I need to configure something in the xorg.conf file, but the file is not there since the once generated by xorgcfg fails to complete its configuration.

OK, essentially this seems like a configuration issue with the Xorg config file. it be running on a framebuffer device, not least because i would fully expect you to think it is really really bad (when it's actually just a very basic support, and not suited for your card).

I've never touched an ATI card, but if you go and install the real ATI drivers, which i think are avaiable from ati.com somewhere, and tell Xorg to use THAT driver, then everything should be just magnificent, with full hardware decoding support etc... the documentation that comes with the driver should be sufficeint to get you going, if not though, have a search as there have been a lot of ATI related threads recently.

I went to the ATI site, but the driver is a RPM, and I have gentoo, so I tried it and it wouldn't install. I did emerge the ati-drivers package though, but now I'm not sure what I need to type up in my xorg.conf file.

Don't they provide source code at ATI?

Well, I tried the ATI rpm, but after loading all the required dependencies, I still get a long list of failed dependencies when trying to install the rpm, including GLIBC, which I JUST installed. Is there some other way to get this thing working?

Solved it, seems that I didn't need to run the ATI aource rpm, because everything was install with the "emerge ati-drivers" command in gentoo. I just didn't know that fglrxconfig was avalable to me after emerging that package. Well, all works well now. Here's a great tutorial on how to set it up btw:
