I've never used puppy, but it's likely to be an xorg driver or EDID problem. Post the outputs of these commands and someone may be able to help you:

Code:
$ lspci | grep -i vga
Code:
$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Code:
$ grep 'WW\|EE' /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Depending on what DE or window manager you're running you should be able to open a terminal emulator from the menu.
