Question Can't see long filenames

Hi, I can't see long file names under Amigo Linux. It's based on ZipSlack 9.1. Both command line and Window Maker don't recognize file names longer than 8 characters with a three letter extension. I can't install tar.gz files like file.tar.gz using installpkg. I was hoping I could install LedIt 3.0. I can't see the longfile names that I created in Windows 9x created either.

I forgot to mention that I download files using Windows XP and tried to open them under Linux. The long file names that Linux created are ok. I also notice that all file names on my FAT harddrives have an asterisks at the end of the name.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It just dawned on me that I can rename the tar.gzip file using Linux. Duh. I'll try that. First I'll need to look for the rename command in the LinuxQuestions Wiki.

If you mount it as vfat rather than fat12/16 it should
work as expected ... but then, I've never used zip-
slack or amigo :)

Cheers,

Ok, thanks. I'll read about VFat.

Anyone know how I run an install script from the command prompt? I think the extension ends in "sh." I can't find the command name in the help documents. Obviously, I can't use pkginstall or the package manager. I can install programs by double clicking the script in my window manager. Just wondering.

I can see long filenames if I go to /mnt/hdc6. hdc6 corresponds to my second harddisk and third partition. It has a FAT32 partition. The first and second partition on this drive has a FAT16. I can't see the long file names on my first drive that has a FAT32 partition. Weird.

Here's an update:

I found the fstab file. It looks like Linux is mounting my FAT32 volume on drive C as a UMSDOS drive instead of VFAT. I'll read more about fstab.
