Unhappy Can't run startx

Hello,

I installed SuSE 10.1 and everything worked fine, installed Xgl worked fine. after a few reboots my system didn't log me on automatically anymore. normally it stops a second or two at the AlexXPS login: and then automatically boots into the GUI.

now it doesn't go any further than that. so I log in as root and run startx

then is says:

xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.4230 (the 4230 is not always the same value)

after 20 sec or so it says

giving up.
/usr/X11R6/bin/xinit: connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to xserver
/usr/X11R6/bin/xinit: no such process (errno 3): server error

Does anybody please known how I can fix this or how I can get back into my GUI?

it's so depressing when you worked 4 hours on getting it to work (since i'm a noob, it takes really long!) and then rebooting to find that it doesn't work anymore

All help would be greatly appreciated!

Don't login as ROOT. login as a normal user and then run startx.

You are not supposed to run the X server with root authority, so most distributions are setup by default to not allow it.

As to why your settings have changed from automatic login, to gui login to text login.. I have no idea why that happened if you didn't make any changes. may want to run a file system check (fsck) on your system..

It does the same when I don't login as ROOT

Only the .serverauth has a different value

I did an update of xgl before I rebooted, could that be related?
