Can't get Gnome or KDE to load

I am hoping that someone can help me with this problem. It started when I was changing some settings and turned on desktop effects with beryl running. When I rebooted I got a message that nautilus would not start. I researched the error message and found that stopping the bonobo-activation-server service could fix this. I tried this and then gnome would load but would only give me desktop icons, no panels or anything. I logged into the KDE desktop and uninstalled gnome. I restarted and then it would not let me log into the KDE desktop either. It gave me the login but stated that my password was wrong for all accounts. I tried to install gnome from the command line and it finished with no errors. Now when I startx it comes up to a blank desktop with only a terminal window and an xclock. I cannot find anything online to tell me how to get gnome back up and running. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you need any files or other info posted just let me know.

OS is
Fedora Core 7

I am not sure how to add a mirror. I do know that I have both the livina and fedora repo's set up correctly. I got gnome to install earlier using: yum install gnome I have not uninstalled it since then. If I use that now it tells me that gnome is installed. For some reason I can not get either gnome or kde to load when i use startx it just loads a very basic gui interface with only a terminal window and an xclock window. If I reboot with my init level set to 5 it boots to a KDE type log on but will not let me log on. It just tells me that the log on is wrong even though I am sure that it is correct as I can log in with if from the command line.

[root@local.host~]#yum install gnome
Loading "protectbase" plugin
0 packages excluded due to repository protections
Setting up Install Process
Parsing package install arguments
Nothing to do

Reinstall worked quite nicely to solve the issue thanks for your help though.
