Can't Find zlib

While running ./configure, I received the following message:

checking sys/poll.h presence... yes
checking for sys/poll.h... yes
checking for poll in -lpoll... no
checking for compress in -lz... no
configure: error: You must have zlib installed!

So I downloaded zlib-1.1.4-8.i386.rpm and installed it. No problem.
However, when I ran configure again, it gave me the same error message. I tried to reload zlib but it said that it was already installed.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.
