Question Can't access files in lvm partition: unknown filesystem type 'lvm2pv'

Hello

First I would like to thank those who provide and maintain this forum and accepted my registration.

I have an XP PC which used to run Fedora in a dual boot arrangement. I had it refurbished, with an extra hard drive. Now, so far, it only uses XP, but my Linux data is preserved in two partitions, one, /boot, is ext3 and easy to access, but the other is LVM and I can't yet get at it yet.

I am running Knoppix from a cd, and here is some of the output I get (it's obvious that /dev/hdc3 is what I want):

root@Knoppix:/dev# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/hda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xd30ed30e

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 5222 41945683+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/hda2 5223 19457 114342637+ 7 HPFS/NTFS

Disk /dev/hdc: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xe02ae02a

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdc1 * 1 7687 61745796 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/hdc2 7688 7700 104422+ 83 Linux
/dev/hdc3 7701 9729 16297942+ 8e Linux LVM
root@Knoppix:/dev#

root@Knoppix:/ramdisk/home/knoppix# pvscan

Couldn't find device with uuid 'hc7Q05-kB4t-aock-HbJi-kDFY-ykmt-EVzVrr'.
PV /dev/hdc3 VG VolGroup00 lvm2 [15.53 GB / 0 free]
PV unknown device VG VolGroup00 lvm2 [1.94 GB / 64.00 MB free]
Total: 2 [17.47 GB] / in use: 2 [17.47 GB] / in no VG: 0 [0 ]
root@Knoppix:/ramdisk/home/knoppix# cat /dev/VolGroup00/
cat: /dev/VolGroup00/: No such file or directory

I tried lots of approaches from suggestions on the internet, and this looked the most promising.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Harry (First Onlooker)

Did you activate your lvm? Something like:

vgchange -a y VolGroup00

(from http://tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/ )

Thank you

Thank you mostlyharmless for your reply. I will try that next time I use Knoppix.

Very best wishes, Harry =
