Can´t get Telewell TW-IA300C ADSL to work with Fedora Core 2
 

Hello

I know that the Telewell TW-IA300C ADSL modem is supposed to work with Red Hat 9 etc, but I would like to get it to work in Fedora core 2 but I have no idea how to install it, I am an complete newbie regarding linux and I haven´t found anything on the subject. I got the advice to run "dhcpcd" and "pump" in an terminal but that didn´t work. Any ideas?

Did you run these commands as root? What were the outputs? Post them here, so we can check it out.

Yup, I was logged in as root, but i must have made some kind of mistake as the terminal replied that the commands does not exist :S
But I am sure that i typed them correct.

As root, try:
ifdown eth0
then
ifup eth0

Those commands return the following:
ifdown eth0
use: ifdown <device>
ifup eth0
/sbin/ifup configuration for eth0 could not be found

There are some special drivers on www.telewell.com for red hat 9, but i suppose they won´t work as
fedora core 2 use another kernel. Looks like I have to buy another modem or wait until Linux supports my modem. The telewell site states that they will not provide any linux support and their email address is dead :/

I dont think the problem is with the modem. I guess is the network card. Is this card properly installed?

As the network card is onboard I had disabled it in BIOS as I currently do not use it. I enabled it and as i booted linux it configured the device without problems, altough it complains about a missing network cable (duh...). I tried the networkconfiguration utility in gnome and it returns the following:
device
nas1 unknown <- that seems to be the adsl-device
eth0 ethernet


Too bad that I don´t own a router as I am quite sure that i would be able to access the internet via the network card.

Sorry, friend. I dont quite understand your setup. You disabled the network card? Where is your adsl modem connected to?


A standard setup would be:

internet ----> adsl modem -----> ethernet card (eth0) -----> linux

Hmm maybe i should have mentioned that the adsl modem is a PCI intern modem and does not use the network card (atleast that I know of)

Well, thats the first time I bump this device. Did you try to find specific info on this, over the internet? What about the manufacturers?
Maybe posting in a fc2 forum would do, also.

Well I have searched quite a bit and the things i have come up with are:

-No native support in linux, use drivers from the manufacturers homepage, but the are not availabe
for Fedora core 2

-the card is not a win/linmodem (doesn´t that implie that it would be possible to hot-wire some kind of driver for it?)

-the manufacturer does not provide support for linux

So if somebody doesn´t have an url for an driver, i will be forced to buy another modem.
What Fedora forum would you recommend?

Try to post again here at LQ, in the distro forum. People tend to be more prone to answer 0 replied threads. Or maybe in the hardware section.
Did you try to find this device in the hcl? Maybe its there.

Also, you can post at the redhat forums, in their website. I guess there are redhat forums...

Is this modem cutting-edge technology? How old is it? I mean, sometimes development comes with some delay, to the linux world. But to make sure, you gotta search thoroughly.

Well the modem is a couple of years old and use a chip that is quite common but a driver is nowhere in sight. Well thanks anyway :)

Even odds says this is just a rebranded common chipset produced by a 3rd party, what's the output of:

/sbin/lspci

Gotta tell ya, the kernel driver guys don't really go after these proprietary DSL modems at all really, so the only shot of an Open Source driver is someone out there who was just bored enough to hack out one on their own.

Also, can you direct link to the download page for that driver? I can't seem to find it on the english side of the site.
