can't use modem with 2.6.8 kernel - probably modules fault
 

Hello

I have a GVC 56k modem connected to COM1 (ttyS0), and have just compiled a 2.6.8 kernel
But i have probably forgot to compile some modules since kppp is not able to find one...

All i get is: "Unable to open device" message, and the message is same for all the devices i try:
/dev/ttyS0, /dev/ttyS2...

So i am guessing, since the modem works fine on 2.4 kernel, that i have not choose right modules to be compiled in new kernel.

It has work on my previous installation of Slackware 10.

What modules should i compile to in order to get modem working?

I tried googling but didn't find anything useful...

If this is the modem I think it is, with the internals of an HSF 56k (i.e. a winmodem) then you'll probably need to recompile the modem driver (from the hsf sources) as well.

The module needed by a Conexant modem is proprietary, and the free beta version (no longer available from the developer) doesn't work with any 2.6.x kernel. You have to pay $15 to get the newest one from linuxant.com.

My advice would be to stick with a 2.4 series kernel and use the beta driver (which you should be able to find somewhere on the net if you want to compile it for a different kernel version), or get a different (hardware) modem.

Personally I find the beta linux driver _much_ more stable than the windows driver!
