Can't use make command when installing from source

I'm using a distro called SLAX 5.0.6 Kill Bill Edition (it's a LiveCD) but I have the HDD install option, and it's based on Slackware. Whenever I try to compile a programme from source I run:

root@slax:~/Desktop/gtkspell-2.0.11# ./configure
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/ginstall -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for gawk... gawk
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
checking for style of include used by make... GNU
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name... a.out
checking whether the C compiler works... yes
checking whether we are cross compiling... no
checking for suffix of executables...
checking for suffix of object files... o
checking whether we are using the GNU C compiler... yes
checking whether gcc accepts -g... yes
checking for gcc option to accept ANSI C... none needed
checking dependency style of gcc... gcc3
checking how to run the C preprocessor... /lib/cpp
configure: error: C preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check
See `config.log' for more details.

I'm presuming this means everything is ok.

Then I run:

root@slax:~/Desktop/gtkspell-2.0.11# make

and get

make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.

I take it this is wrong.

Thanks in advance, Thomas

The ./configure script failed
configure: error: C preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check
See `config.log' for more details.

Ooooooh.... That's embarrassing!

Thanks and I'll try and fix that.
