Can't toggle anymore between showing/hiding hidden files
 

HI guys, I'm experiencing a very odd problem. I'm on Ubuntu 14.04 and I've just been in Nautilus --> preferences --> view --> show hidden and backup files. Everything worked and I did see my hidden files. I then closed nautilus and reopened it some time later but the hidden files disappeared. I opened again the preferences but the checkbox is still checked. SO basically now I can't show hidden files anymore. I'm slightly confused as to why this is happening, does anybody have an idea please?

ctrl+h or open a terminal go to where ever you want to look for hidden files and ls -la to just verify you still have them. that'd be the first step.
