can't su root after starting X server

i got problem, i can su root just fine before i startx with my normal user account but after X loads i can't su root, says password is incorrect... this happened after i did 'etc-update in gentoo.

Are you on a non-US keyboard? Maybe the key-bindings
in X are different from console after your upgrade ...

Check /etc/group and see if you are listed in the wheel group.
