Can't start Apache2 server in Ubuntu

I've been receiving this error message every time I try to start Apahe2 from the terminal:
* Starting web server apache2 [Sat Apr 23 11:25:36 2011] [warn] NameVirtualHost has no VirtualHosts
(13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address
no listening sockets available, shutting down
Unable to open logs
Action 'start' failed.
The Apache error log may have more information.

I've checked some of the posts here for people with similar problems, however nothing has managed to work so far. I also check the error logs, and nothing is recorded there.

The thing which really confuses me is that I can use telnet(on port 80) to receive the HTML file from my server. Also, if I type in localhost in my browser, then my web page will come up.

Everything seems to be working fine except for that permission denied message I get when I try to start apache2 from the terminal. Any ideas what's causing this? Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

Look for a file name ports.conf under /etc/apache2/

In that file you will find a line saying

Listen 80

make it as follows:

NameVirtualHost *:80
Listen 80

Restart apache2 services using: service apache2 stop and then service apache2 start and see if you get that same error message again.
