Can't shut down computer in Fedora 16 with kernel 3.3.?
 

When I attempt to shut down my computer it goes through the process and immediately restarts it again. the only way I can shut it down is to go to a terminal window and type halt and at completion turn it off with the on/off switch. I've tried "shutdown" and it reboots also.

Welcome to LQ!!!

Are you trying to say that whenever you try to shutdown your computer it restarts. So basically if you type shutdown your system restarts. When did this start happening? Did you make any changes to the system. Did you do some tweaking with symlinks between shutdown and restart scripts?

What happens if you open up terminal and type init 0? Does it shutdown or it restarts?

It has been doing this since I logged in the second time and the kernel was updated to 3.3.??. I did about 450 updated at that point. I did what you mentioned about init 0 and it shutdown and then automatically rebooted. When I say it shut down, I mean the terminal window closed and the screen filled with the shutdown data displayed, but the machine never shut down or turned off.

So basically when you type shutdown or when you did init 0 it closed the terminal window and ran the shutdown script but it didnt go down. Is that correct?

Share the output of the following command:

You have to trim that file. Copy that file onto your desktop and remove the previous data (data before you did the upgrade). Renamed that file (file that you have copied to your desktop) as messages.txt and attach it to this post.

I've played with Fedora 16 for a couple of weeks now and have not made very much headway. Every day brings new problems. I think I'll reload Windows 7 back on this computer and start getting something accomplished that I am confortable with.

You should know that Fedora is RedHat's bleeding edge R&D distro.
You'd probably be better off with eg Mint or some form of Ubuntu.

I am not sure if Ubuntu or Mint will help. Those also fit in the same category as bleeding edge. I have Mint installed on my Dell laptop and its X server keeps crashing. In middle of my work, it takes me back to login screen automatically. And I do not see anything in log files as well.
Since this, I am a bit apprehensive about advising Ubuntu or Mint to new users. I would recommend something more stable. In process of making the distribution so called "user friendly" and GUI intuitive, they are putting up more bloat and making systems unstable for day to day use.
I know Cent OS is not geared towards desktops or laptops, but I am of the opinion that it works much better that those desktop distributions, is stable and just works. You may not have new upgrades every now and then and you may not have a big fat repository, but it will make your life easier in long term. I am going back to Cent OS 6 on my laptop now.
