Can't see usb modem!

Hi All,

Just finnished intsalling the speedtouch USB drivers on my system with RH 7.3 using the "SpeedtouchUSB-HOWTO using Benoit Papillault's OpenSource drivers."

Everything seemed to go according to plan, except that when at the final stage (testing) I typed:

# modem_run -m -f /usr/src/alcaudsl.sys

I got the message:

"I'm Sorry I didn't find your ADSL modem"

I didn't understand the tips it gave about looking in the /proc/bus/usb as I am a newbie. To my understanding USB seems to be working, at least with my Intellimouse!

The modem lights never light up. Is this a USB problem?

What can I do to find the source of the problem?

Installing the modem will greatly enhance my prospects of achieving my next tasks: SB Audigy, Oracle installation,...

Many thanks in advance,

Andy

In /proc/bus/usb you should have current usb configuration. Look into it and, if unsure, post what you can find to allow someone to view it and help you.

In /proc/bus/usb I find the following items:

001 002 003 004 devices drivers

The contents of the file drivers:

usbdevfs
hub

The contents of the file devices:

I read in some documentation that when USB devices are plugged in, a message appears in the console. This didn't happen to me. But I have since found that it works when in runlevel 3 as oposed to when using the Shell Konsole in runlevel 5.

Hmm, it looks that the modem is not detected. Is the result taken when the device was connected?

Andy4Linux 11-04-2002 08:09 AM

The modem is plugged in at boot up, as I use it with Win XP to see the net. The act of unplugging and plugging it in again gives the following message in runlevel 3:

hub.c: Cannot enable port 1 of hub 1, disabling port. hub.c: Maybe the USB cable is bad?

I'm sure the cable is not bad as use it in "that other OS!"

The files and folders of /proc/bus/usb all remain exactly the same as above.
