Is the mouse not working at all, or is it simply the cursor not being visible?

I'd say it's either an issue with your cursor "font" or a display driver problem. Try switching to different cursors using your desktop control panel. Otherwise, try tweaking your xorg.conf. Most drivers support some kind of HWCursor option. Try setting it to 0 or "off".

Your distro is Fedora Core 5.

To solve your mouse problem:

1. Open a root terminal.
2. Edit the xorg configuration file
Code:
#gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
3. Revise the "Device" section to change/add the red stuff:
Code:
Section"Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "nv"
VendorName "Videocard vendor"
BoardName "nVidia Corporation C51 PCI Express Bridge"
## fehlender cursor, hwcursor off rhb#182517
Option "HWCursor" "off"
EndSection
4. Save the file and exit gedit.
5. Log out of your session and log back in (you don't have to reboot, just log out to the XDM/GDM/KDM login screen).

You should have the pointer.

BTW, this happened to me in Gentoo and Fedora Core 5.
