Can't remove symbolic link

rm -f download (which is a symbolic link to /mnt/f)
"rm: cannot remove 'download/': not a directory

rmdir doesn't work either, obviously

and I can't create another link called "download" cuz it says "cannot overwrite directory"

How do I remove a symbolic link?? It would also be nice to know how to redirect a link since I just want to make "download" link to /mnt/f/download
