Question can't receive mail from linux server

Hi, i'm still new to Linux. I've got a linux server at work. 3 accounts all of a sudden stopped receiving mail but they can send out mail only. i had someone login remotely but they say they don't c anythin wrong wit the accounts.
please give me tips on wat 2 check for.

Are there other accounts?
Local mail or external mail?
How is the mail retrieved?
Which distribution?
Which MTA

Are there any quota setting in place that hinder new incoming mail in cases when the limit is reached? Give a bit more info about the environment.
