Can't print with HP7760 in Mandriva 2006

I've recently installed mandriva 2006 and subsequently bought an hp 7760 printer.
I can't get it to work at all.
I've tried the auto configuration but, although it can see the printer (HPPSsmart 7760 Enabled Unknown model Hp Printer on USB) when I try to change the drive from 'raw' by selecting the model and ghostscript + hpijs (or ghostscript/hpijs) it gives failed to configure printer.
The log for that bit reads:

2:33:01 printerdrake[6256]: running: foomatic-configure -R -q -s cups -n HPPSmart77_1
22:33:02 printerdrake[6256]: running: lpstat -l -p -v
22:33:04 printerdrake[6256]: running: lpstat -p HPPSmart7760
22:33:05 last message repeated 2 times
22:33:06 printerdrake[6256]: running: lpstat -l -p -v
22:33:11 printerdrake[6256]: running: ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1
22:33:11 printerdrake[6256]: running: /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups status
22:33:18 printerdrake[6256]: running: lpstat -l -p -v
22:33:49 last message repeated 6 times
22:34:05 last message repeated 3 times
22:34:08 printerdrake[6256]: running: foomatic-configure -q -s cups -n HPPSmart7760 -c hp:/usb/photosmart_7700_series?serial=MY47U2J0CFU0 -p HP-PhotoSmart_7760 -d hpijs -N HP PhotoSmart 7760 -L --backend-dont-disable=0 --backend-attempts=1 --backend-delay=30 -o PageSize=A4 -o PageRegion=Letter -o PrintoutMode=Normal -o InputSlot=Default -o Duplex=None -o Quality=FromPrintoutMode

I've tried installing HPLIP and the associated bits and pieces from update (i think) but this didn't make any difference.
I then tried installing HPLIP from hp/sourceforge and following the instructions about compiling the driver (?).
I then get stuck at ./configure --prefix=/usr
when I eventually get

configure: error: cannot find cups-devel support

in the config.log there are lots of references to the 'failed programme'
/* confdefs.h. /*

Also, when installing mandriva (from discovery box set) it had problems installing
cups-1.1.23-17 and gutenprint-cups-5.0.0-0.9
although I did then install those manually

I've read the linux printing cups page and obviously failed at the install a driver for your printer stage.
I'm sure, being new to linux and not understanding most of what I've typed, that I've missed something obvious.
I'm also interested to know if just reinstalling mandriva might make things work.
Any help greatly appreciated
Thanks.
Tom

Make sure you install hpijs (using urpmi) and that cups is running. After that, start a web browser and go to http://localhost:631 and add/configure your printer.

thanks.
I've got hpijs on already - this is what it says when i do hipjs -h
Hewlett-Packard Co. Inkjet Server 2.1.5
Copyright (c) 2001-2004, Hewlett-Packard Co.
and the software installer says i already have the hplip-hpijs-0.9.5.1.1.20060mdk package

I've restarted cups and gone to http://localhost:631 and just get a blank page when I go to the printers (manage printers) page.
still nothing from the printer.

There is a problem with your cups installation, but I am not sure how you can fix it. Try uninstalling cups and related packages and the use rpmdrake or urpmi to reinstall them.

I've tried uninstalling cups - can't reinstall it though - either though control centre (it says verifying package sigs etc but then it remains as one of the packages i can install). I've tried installing it through rpmfind - it says it's installing but once i try to configure the printer i get
installing packages...failed to install cups printing system.
I've tried urpmi cups
and get the following

installing cups-1.1.23-17mdk.i586.rpm from /var/cache/urpmi/rpms
Preparing... #############################################
1/1: cups warning: /etc/cups/classes.conf created as /etc/cups/classes.conf.rpmnew
warning: /etc/cups/cupsd.conf created as /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.rpmnew
warning: /etc/cups/mime.convs created as /etc/cups/mime.convs.rpmnew
warning: /etc/cups/mime.types created as /etc/cups/mime.types.rpmnew
warning: /etc/cups/printers.conf created as /etc/cups/printers.conf.rpmnew
warning: /etc/pam.d/cups created as /etc/pam.d/cups.rpmnew
warning: /etc/xinetd.d/cups-lpd created as /etc/xinetd.d/cups-lpd.rpmnew
#############################################
error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/share/cups/doc/ipp.pdf;43887158: cpio: MD5 sum mismatch

as far as i'm aware (and as you suggest) there's a problem with cups (if indeed it's really on the computer).
any idea how i can really get it installed please?
thanks

Have you contacted Mandriva about this? Their website is http://wwwnew.mandriva.com/en/community/ Have you contacted CUPS about this? Their website is http://www.cups.org/

Obviously, something isn't working properly between the two.

Let me know what you find out.

For me, my printing is working fine. But I'm doing things differently. I bought ESP Print Pro (http://www.easysw.com/printpro/ ) and it works "out of the box". At the same time, I also like to know how things work. So I've been spending some time here, looking at the problems people are having and trying to learn from them.

Your printer is fully supported here too. You wont have to worry about some of the features of the printer not working.

Best regards,
Steve
