Can't print over network

I have installed Mandrake 9.0. I am trying to print to an HP OfficeJet Pro 1150 printer on a windows XP machine on the network, but the job never makes it to the XP spooler. Looking at localhost:631, I see that the jobs seem to be stuck "processing since...". The log file shows "Unable to connect to SAMBA host, will retry in 60 seconds.... Success". What does this actually mean?

I do not understand the interplay between CUPS, SAMBA, the Linux drivers(filters?) (The driver is available (Ghostscript+hpijs), and shows up in localhost:631 as foomatic+hpijs), the driver on the XP machine etc.

I have been able to print a simple text file using smbclient so the hardware is working OK. The lp command just puts the file into the spooler queue where it gets stuck like the other jobs..

I am a complete Linux beginner, and need simple instructions please!
