can't ping linux box

This is getting frustrating. How can I enable my box to reply to the ping command???

hosts.deny contains...

ALL:ALL EXCEPT 192.168.0. ENY
ALL:ALL EXCEPT 127.0.0.1ENY

hosts.allow contains....

ALL: 192.168.0.

Both contain CR after the last entry.

I have other services working (web, ftp, ssh), but can't get a simple ping to work!

TIA.

Have you allowed ping in your firewall configuration?

Check iptables, for the icmp protocol. See if it is Accepted, or rejected.

I had the f/w installed, but it wasn't "turned on". I have now enabled it, which all by itself allowed mysql connections. Ping still didn't work. I've added the following rule (after much research) but it didn't help.

*filter
:FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0]
:INPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
:OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
:allow-ping - [0:0]
# allow-ping
-A allow-ping -p icmp -m icmp --icmp-type any -j ACCEPT
COMMIT

I realize this isn't secure, but for testing, I wanted to make it as basic as possible. The box (mandrake 10.2) is behind a h/w firewall. I don't even care to have the firewall on this box enabled if not necessary.

Thanks again.
