can't ping after new install

i have just installed lunar linux (sorcerer based) and it boot's to prompt. in order to continue the install i need to connect to the internet. It seems to have my ethernet card and i thought i configured everything right (i am connecting thru a router) but when i try to ping, i get network unreachable. when i /etc/init.d/network start i get
*starting network:
Starting Eth0: dhcpcd[742]: dhcpStart; ioctl SIOCGIFHWADDR: no such device
dhcp failed
setting default route: SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable
failed to set gateway

I had that problem when I built it in static instead of module. I also had to hand enter the module name (i.e. sis900 for my card). Try that.
