Can't partition in Mandrake on Ext USB drive

I'm trying to install Mandrake Community 10.1 on my external USB 200 gig hard drive.

When deciding where to install the Mandrake, it starts to format its partition and then says

An error occured
I don't know how to format sda1 in type ext2:vfat

How do I get this working?

First, are you really sure you want to install to a usb drive? That sounds like a head ache to get working if ever I heard one. Does your motherboard even support booting to usb? Even once you manage to get the drive formated, I think it will take a heavily modified initrd file to get the kernel to see the root partition as it boots.

As for getting the drive formated, I have no reliable theory as to why you cannot partition it. Maybe the installer kernel doesn't have the proper modules loaded or some such. I'd down load a knoppix CD and use that. I'd recommend having one around anyway as they make wonderfull rescue CD's.
