Can't logon to PhpMyAdmin

I've just installed phpmyadmin on my ubuntu home server. When I go to the http://(myip)/myphpadmin the logon screen shows up. I put in my root username peter and the password that I use for mysql which I also used when I setup phpmyadmin. I get an error message:
"#1045 - Access denied for user 'Peter'@'localhost' (using password: YES)"
Do I need to add something to a config file somewhere?

I got it working, according to a post I found here the username must be "root" not my username.
