Can't login to Ubuntu 10.10 without live-cd

I recently downloaded and installed Ubuntu 10.10 from live-cd, this is a dual-boot system with windows xp pro installed. Ubuntu installed, but during install there were warnings of certain files that couldn't copy and I'd like to view them if there's a log containing those errors. I can boot into xp pro with no problem. I've logged into Ubuntu maybe 3x. The first time I tried it succeeded. After that it 's been hit and miss.
I've been able to get into system using live-cd and so far I've only found buffer error, I beleive that is drm related.

The machine is an:
emachine T-1221
celeron 1.3Ghz processor
512Meg ram
IntelDirect AGP 3D

As I do have internet connection while using live-cd, I can post whatever necessary files that are needed. In fact I'm going to boot it up and post output of dmesg. I'll be back. But in the mean time any info is definately appreciated. Thank you.

ok
try using the Vesa safe graphics option at grub2 boot line
at grub2 boot menu, highlight the ubuntu entry and press "e" to edit line
then enter somewhere on the kernel line "xforcevesa" no quotes

it's bad if certain files didnt get copied during install...that may be detrimental
and need a reinstall attempt

however; the default Ubuntu 10.10 with Gnome recommends at least 512mb ram so maybe you should either install a lite WM like openbox, fluxbox,LXDE, etc or install a lighter Ubuntu like Xubuntu or maybe Lubuntu with LXDE

I'm not sure if the problem is solved but I had to change the jumper settings on hd to cable select, also change login screen to something simple. now I can login without cd-support. I think that I 'm going to have to reinstall so as to see if the files that failed to copy will copy this time. Is there anyway to view and install the missing files.

While asking this question I have found bootstrap.log file. I think that these were the messages that I saw upon install, I guess I need to checkout apt. Here is the log anyway.

In the process of reinstalling ubuntu, the original ubuntu was installed on an extended partition with 2 logical partitions obviosly grub was inside, well grub was deleted making it impossible to boot into windows os. My next question is will the new grub point to the windows os?

jmc1987 10-15-2010 01:50 AM

Did you verify the iso checksum and then verify the cd checksum. How did you install ubuntu through windows or boot the live cd? If you installed through windows that may cause you some bugs. Try install straight from the live cd. Also when you boot from the cd select the option to verify the CD. I've once install centos and it booted fine and went I tried to run "yum update" I find out yum wasn't fully installed. Then I noticed half my system was missing. The problem was caused by bad cd. So make sure you check your checksums.

And yes when you reinstall grub will try to detect windows install and configure it in your grub

Thank you linus72 and jmc1987, Linus you were right there was a necessity to reinstall.

I booted and ran live-cd, als installed through try first option. This time there were no big white warning signs, though dmesg has same output. Update manager has actually started working, it installed linux headers and few other things, now I'm going to install apt to fill some of the missing dependencies.

As I am new to Ubuntu I haven't figured out how to get in to view some of the files I need to edit in root directory like the grub menu. I'm a little moreaccustomed to accessibility in Debian Lenny, I can crawl around a little bit just didn't have it fully configured. I was trying this 1 because it was supposed to be easier and it seems to be but I'm stuck at this point. Thank You for your assistance.

I need to get this 1 to work so as to move on to installing an os on system with
AMD PHENOM IIX6 1090T BLACK EDITION
ASEUS MOTHERBOARD
10GIGS RAM
2- 1Tb sata drives

I'm almost ready for a nice secure os.

dual boot system?

i think you need to install first the distro and make a partition for windows

EDDY1 10-15-2010 03:04 AM

I'd like to but I'm still in the process of learning. I only have almost 11 mos in and 2mos. of that I was without a computer. But yes that's my ultimate goal. I just built 2 machines 1 for my wife with the
AMD P IIX4 955 BE
ASUES MB 8GIG'S RAM etc.

I put windows on it so she would have a computer. I want mine to be fast and secure.

I have a Dell Optiplex Gx-1 with Debian Lenny.
The emachine t1221 now has windowsxp and Ubuntu
Compaq 5000 sitting there waiting for whatever os I put on it.

The bottom line is I'm still experimenting and learning how to dual-boot and it's working because grub did point to the windows partition.

generally (due to my experience) it is the save way to first install windows and then Linux.
It is theoretically possible, to create an NTFS-partition from Linux, but in (at least) some cases this partition will not be recognized by windows.
This can result in that windows will overwrite parts of the linux partition.

it is possible ah
ive done it many times
in installing a distro using live cd
there is a option that you can create a partition for windows

im using mandriva
and it is like ubuntu

installing first the windows is so risky

EDDY1 10-15-2010 03:26 AM

I was lucky that before I reinstalled Ubuntu I used windows devicemanger to delete the extended partition that Ubuntu created, after doing so I went back to boot into windows and couldn't.I've been reading on different ways of partitioning also multi-booting, with no success stories. As for the first time I dual-booted I lost my hd, this time I have accomplished removing and reinstalling, without loss of the native os and learning a little more about grub. I want to do a little manual partitioning next, but need more info on grub.

yancek 10-15-2010 10:07 AM

If you were able to boot xp and unable to boot Ubuntu without the CD in the drive, you probably installed Grub to the Ubuntu partition and not the mbr. You seem to have resolved this problem.

More info about Grub:

http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/grub-2.html

Grub doesn't do any partitioning, it is a bootloader. It is usually easier to do your partitioning with GParted or Parted Magic, either of which you can download and burn to a CD.

Thanks for the info guys

I'd like to thank everyone for their assistance, yes the machine is up and running, at the present time I am able to get into Ubuntu without cd support and I have figured out how to accesss and view the grub record to edit. In the Debian Lenny I can log into root make changes and log out, so all I did was create a root password I got info from this link:

http://blog.ask4itsolutions.com/2010...erick-meerkat/

Now I have to go in and edit grub.
