can't login

Im new at linux and i'm trying to install ubuntu studio 11.10 on a alineware (dell) m17x

I installed it on a new SSD but, when I booted and tried to login, I only got a blue screen with a weird looking login window with A "xfce desktop environment" option fixed in what looked like a drop-menu.

i loged in and it only loads... well i'm not really shure what it is. it looks like an OS but it doesnt even have a text editor it actually tries to load the logs on a subtitle editor). it has a console emulator but it doesnt really work.

I really don't know what's happening.

Any ideas?

It accepts commands? so you can run the command;
uname -a
cat /etc/release
to see what system you are running? XFCE4 is a frugal window manager so I would guess you have successfully installed and using a linux system.

Rightclicking on the desktop will give you an option for "applications" if there is no visible menu.

Any chance you can post a screenshot? Even take a photo of the monitor.

Otherwise, we may be able to talk you through getting a screenshot from the command line.

yes, Ubuntu Studio uses a frugal WM like gilbert said. but you should still be able to DO stuff in it though - not sure what went wrong with you. Post the screenshot!
