Hi, I installed RH8. Setup first user, (default) and a second user. For some reason, I can't log as the first, default user. Something about invalid pass or userid. The second user logs in fine.

Is there a way I can log in as the second user and redo/change or see the password and id for the first user?

Are you sure you typed it exact. Remember everything is case-sensitive.

there is a password file but it is encrypted...could you not just log as root delete the user account the doesn't work, and re-make it?

Sorry about the double post. When posting, it seemed to hang for a long time, so I hit the submit again. Evidently they both registered.

You can also go to menu--->system settings ---> users & groups then you can just change the password for user 1 in this file.

Thanks for the suggestion, I was able to do it via gnome. Starting out in Linux after having been with Windows since day one is like being dropped in a new town. But soon, you know which bus to take where.

I had the same problem!
Apparently, RH8 does not understand special characters like "&'/*#@ in your username / password at startup.
(it will work when you're in KDE / Gnome)

Change your password while logged in as root, only letters and numbers will work.

I finally fixed it. From Gnome , I just deleted the first user and re-entered it. I don't know what happened when I first installed the first user. It works ok now.

I still don't have any sounds on anything. It recognizes the sound card (soundblaster) but nothing I do from the control panel fixes the sound. Made sure the volume was turned up but nothing. Thinking of trying the Alsa program.

What do you mean by "sound"? The system notification? the music?. You might want to try the "desktop setup wizard" and "control center->Soundcard" option.

What soundcard is it exactly, model etc?

I have a SB Live and the system recognizes it as Creative labs with module: emu10k1

There is no sound on anything. No cd player, no sound from internet files or even system sounds. When you insert a cd, the player comes up and begins running but just no sound.

One time only, when booting up, I saw a message "missing aumix" and something about dsp but that message hasn't appeared since.

I checked for the file and it shows aumix 2.7 present.

I tried turning up the volume on the mixer, turned the sound server on and still no sound whatsoever. Also tried the same thing in KDE but nothing either.

Running rh8 and gnome with minimal install. Computer is a Gateway pIII, 933, 512 ram, 40gb hd,
