sounds like your trying to install windows programs in linux. you'll need wine for that, you can find it here

http://www.winehq.com/

some tips for using wine can be found here

good luck.

Or just use the native linux alternatives:

Winamp ----> use XMMS (you will probably this is already installed on your system)
Limewire ----> errr filesharing? I wouldn't know about that... ;)

Using native linux applications will give you a lot less hassle than installing Wine IMHO.

Peacedog 04-12-2004 06:45 PM

what exactly didn't work? the wine installation? or the installation of programs after wine was installed? or something else? we'll try to help you, but, we'll need more info.

first, slowdown, don't panic. this is all new, so, what distro are you running? i'll try and point you in the direction of the proper download, and try to help you get it installed. i do recomend that you first take a look at linux alternatives, posted in #3 as i have to agree, w/ the statement that you'll have a much easier time learning a new app, and a new os, rather than trying to run the os you know on top of another os you don't know.

what you mean, this is the first time iv used linux, i was pretty good with windows, well, very good but not getting ahead of myself, but i learnt that linux was also good so i thought i'd test it out. whats distro

Peacedog 04-13-2004 06:30 AM

distro = distrobution, i.e. mandrake, redhat, fedora, etc. the different distrobutions handle installation differently, some use rpms, some use dpkg, some use tgz. you'll want to download the appropriate file for your distrobution, and install it accordingly.
