Can't get two computers to recognize each other in Scientific Linux 4.4
 

I am involved in a start-from-scratch research project with my physics department at school, and one of the first things they want me to do is set up a network of a few computers (starting with just two, but adding more later), but I can't even get just the first two to recognize each other. I'm generally savvy with computers, but I'm a complete newb when it comes to Linux. Can anyone help me figure it out? I'm trying to avoid going and buying some $40 copy of Linux for Dummies or something, lol. Thanks...

And if you want us to help you'll need to be bit more specific
as to what you need. "two computers to recognize each other" may
mean something to you - it doesn't mean much to me (and probably
a few others). I *assume* you're talking about an attempt to network
them?

Lack Of Networking Know-How
 

Yes, I'm trying to network the two computers, but in perfect honesty, I'm just hunting around different menus and stuff trying to stumble on to something painfully obvious, because I really am not very familiar with networking. I do okay with Windows networking, but I started using Linux for the first time yesterday, so I'm really new and completely uneducated. Thanks in advance for any direction you can give me...

As far as menus go - I've never heard of "Scientific Linux", so
won't be able to assist with the hunting. As far as the network
set-up goes: what is the physical situation we're looking at?
Two machines on a LAN, two machines with a cross-over cable,
two machines on a LAN with a DHCP server, two machines with
a switch ... ?
