Can't get sound from Mandrake 9.1 with SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Sound Card...
 

I know this has been asked before, but I've browsed the forums for hours trying to solve my problem and can't find any information that helps me decipher the problem. I am a newbie to linux, so here goes my version of what's wrong.

When I try to play audio files in Linux, the players' timers count like there supposed to just as if they were playing the files, except I can't get any sound. I'm aware that the default sound level when you install the operating system is muted, but I've tried using KMix and Aumix to unmute it. There's even a system volume icon right next to my clock which I dragged up to a level where it should be giving me some volume. As I said before, I have a Soundblaster Audigy 2 sound card and when I go to

Mandrake Control Center > Hardware > "Hard drake lists and..." > Soundcard: EMU10K2 Audigy Audio Processor

I see a lit of information to the right that goes like this...

There are also two buttons underneat this that I can press. When I press the "Configure Module" button, nothing seems to happen, but when I press the "Run config tool" button, I see a seperate window that has an drop-down list box labeled "Driver:" Inside this list box are two options: "audigy ()" and "emu10k1 ()".

CAN ANYONE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS? I'm trying to make a permenant switch from Windows to Linux, but I want to be able to listen to music while I work. :)

I am assuming you have no sound whatsoever? Not sure what sound system Mandrake uses, but if it is running ALSA, you can unmute the system by running alsamixer from the command line and unmuting the various channels you need. After that, run "alsactl store" to store the setting permanently. Hope this helps. I would try searching on Mandrake's site also, if you haven't already.

Sorry, I'm really new. To do this do I just go to the command line, logon as the superuser (su) and type alsamixer? If so, it doesn't work...it just gives me an error message saying the command was not found.

You can access alsamixer either as a normal user, or as su. So it's not yet installed on your system. NB: If you are logging into your system as a normal user, then you want to run alsamixer as that user, and not as su. Then you should su and do alsactl store.

I'm not familiar with Mandrake, or doing such things from GUI's, but try alsaconf and see if that let's you configure ALSA. It may be in your menu system, but if not, just open a console and su and then type -> alsaconf

If that doesn't work then you need to go to www.alsa-project.org and get those first three files (Driver, Library, Utilities). Then go to the top of the ALSA page and select SoundCards and find the Creative Labs section ->

I have an Audigy ES I bought here in China, but on the ALSA page it's not listed. Neither is an Audigy 2, for that matter, but every one of the Audigy cards listed on ALSA has the same EMU10K1 drivers, so maybe it doesn't matter. My Audigy is running right now with that EMU10K1 using the instructions under Soundblaster Live. Go figure!
