can't get proper video resolution on PowerBook
 

Pardon me for this similar posting to one I made in the laptop section, but perhaps I'll get a response if I post it here, as I am a newbie. I installed openSUSE 11 on my PowerBook G4/1.33 !5", and I can't seem to get native video resolution, which is 1280x854. Instead I get 1280x800, which isn't as crisp as it should be. My video card is an ATI Radeon mobility 9700, but in the PPC version of openSUSE, there is only one ATI option. I looked over all of the monitor resolution settings available in yast2 and there is no option anywhere for 1280x854 resolution. I did try installing the proper ATI video driver for my PowerBook available from the ATI site, but only x86 or x86-64 versions were available for Linux and not one for the PowerPC architecture. It wouldn't compile.

I also have Ubuntu 7.10 loaded on my PowerBook (triple boot) and it does have the proper resolution. It also assumes a different ATI driver. Is there any way to import the driver from Ubuntu to openSUSE? Can anyone give me a suggestion? openSUSE appears to be the only recent distro that allows me to run MacOSX concurrently in a virtual environment (Mac-on-Linux), meaning that I could use it as my primary OS if I can solve the video problem. You could try to copy /etc/X11/xorg.conf from Ubunto to SUSE.

It might also work to copy the driver (module). But only if it's compiled with the same kernel version and (X?) in both Ubunto and SUSE.

Thanks uppman. It turned out that I was able to solve the problem by simply adding my native resolution to the list in xorg.conf, but the basic configuration wiki is a helpful source I didn't know about.
