Can't get much newer...

I am looking for some step-by-step, not really knowing anything about installing linux, help to get a LAMP webserver online.

i have a dell 1920 w quad core and SATA raid.

Are there any "LAMP for dummies" out there?

just divide and conquer, there's no big secret behind "LAMP" itself, just four separate technologies which can all be installed seperately and off you go. If you get stuck in any particular part, please just ask.

Hi

Firstly, since you say your new to Linux, download an easy to understand distro such as Ubuntu (www.ubuntu.com)

Download the ISO for it, then burn it to CD with whatever burning tools you have available

Follow the REALLY easy installation to get that up and running

Open Synaptic Package manager (found on the "start" button) then search for the extra bits you need to install)

Apache should already be installed, if not its in synaptic, same with MySQL and PHP

Once thats up and running, best thing to do is just google for PHP/SQL tutorials such as creating "login" pages etc etc

You could also check out XAMPP, which is like a (L)AMP software bundle, makes life easier in windows, but with linuxs' package manager you might be better off doing it manually

hope this helps

I never really tried it myself, but I seem to remember that "LAMPS in a box" was a Ubuntu install option. I think perhaps it was a different install disk? I've never tried it, but as advertised you answered a few questions about your hardware and it installed a complete LAMPS stack.

Also, although this does not cover Apache, the "In Pictures" series is excellent for beginners. It's a real gem, I think.

MySQL Basics in Pictures

PHP Basics in Pictures

There's also others, like HTML & CSS, Fireworks, OpenOffice.Org, and Perl.
