I'm trying to install Gentoo on my desktop and have been struggling with getting linux to recognize my cable modem (earthlink service) for days. dhcpcd isn't working, manually configuring the IPs with net-setup hasn't worked (can ping the assigned IP and the broadcast IP (***.***.***.255), but not gateway or anything remote IPs). I'm thinking there's a major problem here, but I'm just not seeing it.
My NIC is being recognized, my cable service works on my XP laptop, and only basic configuration utilities like net-setup, ifconfig, dhcpcd... I don't have to log in for service on earthlink. I have no way of xfering files to my desktop currently (no floppy, no way to burn CDs)
# ifconfig
shows no eth0
# net-setup eth0
enter ip info obtained from my XP laptop
# ifconfig
shows eth0 with IPs I manually assign, RX & TX packets #, collisions 0
# ping *any local ip*
no packets lost, no worries
# ping *any remote ip, including gateway*
all packets lost, no responses... "Destination Host Unreachable"
# dhcpcd eth0
no error msgs
# ifconfig
shows no eth0
# ping *any ip*
"Network is unreachable"
